Purpose
Pour exprimer le BUT (= quel est l’objectif visé par l’action ?), il y a plusieurs structures possibles, mais elles ne sont pas interchangeables à souhait : il faut se poser la question du nombre d’intervenants.
→ le sujet (= S1) fait-il une action pour qu’il (= le même sujet = S1) atteigne un but ?
OU le sujet (= S1) fait-il une action pour qu’une autre personne (= S2) atteigne un but ?
1) if the sentence has only one subject:
a) Subject of the verb in the main clause (= proposition principale) = Subject of the verb in the subordinate clause (= proposition subordonnée) [SV1 = SV2]
→ to / in order to / so as to + BV
EX: He opened the door to go out / in order to go out / so as to go out.
= Il a ouvert la porte pour sortir.
[= HE opened the door and HE went out : SV1 = SV2]
b) negative purpose → in order not to + BV / so as not to + BV (attention: NOT not to + BV)
EX: She opened the window in order not to suffocate / so as not to suffocate.
= Elle a ouvert la fenêtre pour ne pas étouffer.
2) if the sentence involves (= implique) two subjects:
Subject of the verb in the main clause (= proposition principale) ≠ Subject of the verb in the subordinate clause (= proposition subordonnée) [SV1 ≠ SV2]
→ for S2 (not) to + BV
EX:
- She explains the lessons for them* to understand. [= SHE explained and THEY understood : SV1 ≠ SV2]
= Elle explique les leçons pour qu’ils comprennent.
- She is giving them the structures for them* not to make mistakes. [= SHE is giving and THEY do not make : SV1 ≠ SV2]
= Elle leur donne les structures pour qu’ils ne fassent pas d’erreurs.
* Attention : si SV2 = pronom personnel, alors pronom personnel COMPLEMENT !
3) if the object of the purpose is a noun :
→ for + N
EX: They did the job for the money.
= Ils ont fait le travail pour l’argent.
4) another structure [SV1 ≠ SV2 OR SV1 = SV2] :
→ so that + S + may/might/can/could (moins soutenus que may ou might) + BV
EX:
- Jane goes jogging every morning so that she might stay fit. [SV1 = SV2]
= Jane va faire son jogging chaque matin pour (qu’elle puisse) rester en forme.
- We will do the exercise so that the teacher may correct it. [SV1 ≠ SV2]
= Nous ferons l’exercice pour que le professeur le corrige.
